Make everyday personal/professional decisions using Weighted Sum Model (WSM)

Making decisions is an integral part of our daily routines, but making the right decisions is more important as we can lose time, money, energy, people or all of these due to bad decisions.

Everyone wants to get better at making decisions, and sometimes experience is the only way to do so. However, we can improve the quality of our decisions by using different tools and techniques developed specifically for decision making.

One of such tools is the WSM, i.e., the Weighted Sum Model. We can use this method to compare available options or alternatives and select the best one based on different criteria or attributes.

Steps for using Weighted Sum Model Notion Template

Follow the steps to reach the final decision of selecting one from a set of alternatives using the WSM Notion template.

Step 1

List all the available alternatives and put them in columns. Brainstorm and select the criteria based on which the alternatives will be assessed and put the names in the rows.

Step 2

The next step is to work out the relative importance of the criteria using a five-point, a ten-point, a hundred-point or a percentage scale and assign weights.

Step 3

Decide whether a criterion is beneficial or non-beneficial.

Step 4

Next, work your way along the row of the database table, scoring each alternative for each of the considered criteria. You can use a five-point, a ten-point or similar scale to score the qualitative criteria which are expressed in verbal arguments like low, average, high and so on. Also, if the value for a particular criterion can be expressed in terms of a numerical value, you can directly enter the value.

Step 5

The template will multiply the normalized individual scores by the criteria weights and will calculate the total score. Check the ‘Total Score’ table and make the final decision based on the alternative having the highest score.

Solving the above example is very easy with the template. Let’s add the same information in the template.

And the result of this decision-making process can be obtained from the total scores. We can make the final decision based on the total scores of different alternatives. Car 2 is the vehicle of choice in this example and it is the best one in the considered alternatives, based on the criteria and the assigned weights.
